The Beiwe research platform has been developed by the Onnela Lab at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health with funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Onnela Lab was able to crystallize the original concept of digital phenotyping, construct the Beiwe research platform, and develop statistical methods and tools that would help turn the collected data into biomedical and clinical insights. Digital phenotyping is the moment-by-moment quantification of the individual-level human phenotype in situ using data from personal digital devices.

We provided brand identity design for Beiwe and Forest, which is an open-source data analysis platform for Beiwe data. While the concepts are complex, the research has real-world implications for improving global health. The open-source aspect of this work means that researchers all over the world will be using these tools, as well as patients participating in the data. We chose colors and forms that are friendly, approachable, and universal. Beiwe is a transliteration of a Nordic goddess of sunlight and mental health.
